Mr Andrew Gwynne MP recognises the importance of local libraries.
From Tameside Advertiser 12 March 2009
Audenshaw is a small town in the Metropolitan Borough of Tameside which is in Greater Manchester.

Tameside was formed in 1974  by the amalgamation of 5 Boroughs and 4 Urban Districts.

In 1974 Audenshaw had two purpose built libraries which were run by Lancashire County Council.

This web site has been produced to describes how Tameside MBC closed the Audenshaw Library, ending a library service that had been available for Audenshaw residents for 90 years.

It reflects the consequences of government by a large local authority, in which Ward Councilors in the various towns that make up the borough, fight over their share of the budget, to obtain the best services for their constituents. The wards with Councilors from the Governing party invariably get the better treatment with a larger piece of the cake.

Unfortunately from a library users viewpoint, Audenshaw had no Labour Councillors on the Tameside Labour controlled Council when cuts in services were under discussion and as a consequence Audenshaw lost its purpose built excellent library, and Audenshaw readers now have to travel to other towns in the borough if they still wish to borrow books.

This site gives a history of the build up of the library services under Lancashire County Council, the removal of the first of our two libraries by Tameside and then deals with the politics that led up to the closure of our remaining library.
